Food Insecurity on Pender Island
The idyllic scenery of Pender Island doesn’t render us immune to food insecurity. Hunger is a persistent problem for many of our Island’s residents, where the high price of food is exacerbated by limited housing, exceptionally high rent, and the added expense of travel on and off the island. While many Food Bank clients are working, jobs are often seasonal, less than full time, or don’t pay a living wage.
The Pender Island Food Bank has been part of the community on Pender for more than 30 years. This volunteer-run organization now supports about 3,500 client visits per year. Households can visit us once a week for non-perishables, fresh fruits and veggies, and dairy and protein.
The Food Bank relies entirely on donations to exist. You can support the Food Bank directly by e-transfer to penderislandfoodbank@gmail.com or through online platforms such as Zeffy or Canada Helps. Donations of non-perishable food items (undamaged, unopened and within best before dates) can be dropped in the donation box at Tru Value.
You can find out more by visiting our website, by email at penderislandfoodbank@gmail.com, or by searching for us on Facebook.
We are a registered BC Society and a federal charity. Charitable tax receipts are given for any donation more than $20.00.
